A Custom Accessible Villa in Gabon, Africa
At FT Prefab House, we believe that architecture should adapt to the person, not the other way around. In 2018, our team undertook a deeply meaningful project in Gabon, Africa: constructing a fully customized container villa for a client with limited mobility.
This project is a testament to how modular construction can provide dignified, high-performance housing solutions tailored to unique life stories.
I. A Modular Layout Tailored to Life
The villa is not just a house; it is a strategically planned living complex composed of five 20ft containers, divided into four functional zones:
The Master Suite: Built from two 20ft containers, providing a spacious bedroom and a large private en-suite bathroom.
The Social Hub: A combination of two 20ft containers housing a modern kitchen and additional bathroom facilities.
Guest Quarters: A single 20ft container dedicated to providing comfortable accommodation for visitors.
The "Climate Shield" Terrace: The entire footprint is wrapped in a WPC (Wood-Plastic Composite) deck and protected by a massive integrated canopy. This overarching roof is critical in Africa, as it prevents direct sunlight from heating the structures and ensures the outdoor living areas remain dry during heavy tropical rains.
II. Barrier-Free Living: The Heart of the Design
Our client, a former extreme motocross enthusiast who experienced a life-altering accident during a sporting event, required a home that supported his independence.
To achieve this, we implemented Universal Design principles:
Zero-Threshold Transitions: Every entry and interior door was engineered with ultra-low or zero thresholds.
Fluid Mobility: By removing physical obstacles, we maximized the available floor space, ensuring smooth wheelchair navigation throughout the entire villa.
III. Engineering for the African Heat
Gabon's tropical climate demands rigorous thermal management. We selected materials that prioritize both comfort and safety:
Superior Insulation: We utilized 75mm Polyurethane (PU) Sandwich Panels. Known for their exceptional thermal resistance and fireproof properties, these panels keep the interior cool even under the equatorial sun.
Premium Finishes: The exterior features WPC wall cladding for a sophisticated aesthetic and weather resistance, while the interiors are finished with Aluminum Composite Panels (ACP) for a sleek, durable, and easy-to-clean environment.
IV. More Than a Project: A Long-Term Partnership
From the initial 1:1 customization of layouts and materials to the deployment of our technical team to Gabon for on-site installation guidance, our commitment to this project was personal.
Despite his challenges, our client's dedication to his work and his vibrant attitude toward life remain an inspiration to our team. Eight years later, we are proud to still maintain a close relationship with him-a reminder that we don't just export containers; we build lasting homes and global friendships.
